The Difference Between General and Cosmetic Dentistry
Here at Smile Brightly, we are often asked about the differences between general dentistry and cosmetic dentistry services. Many dentists today consider themselves cosmetic dentists. While other dentists provide a range of services, they are still considered “general” dentists. It can be really confusing if you are looking for a dentist that provides a particular service. So what exactly differentiates a “cosmetic” dentist from a “general” dentist? Find out!
What the American Dental Association Says
Since the American Dental Association (ADA) is the professional organization that is recognized by most dentists and patients, it’s a good place to start when talking about the differences between cosmetic and general dentists. The interesting thing about the ADA is that it doesn’t recognize cosmetic dentistry as a specialty. While it does recognize specialties like restorative dentistry, orthodontics and pediatric dentistry, they do not separate cosmetic dentistry from the realm of general dentistry services. What makes this interesting is that many dentists consider themselves cosmetic dentists, and there is even a professional organization just for cosmetic dentists.
So, What’s a General Dentist?
The ADA defines dentistry or general dentistry as, “the evaluation, diagnosis, prevention, and/or treatment of diseases, disorders and/or conditions of the oral cavity and adjacent and associated structures…” In more easy to understand terms, a general dentist takes care of your mouth, teeth, jaw and anything that is associated with your mouth and the structures around your mouth. General dentists provide cleanings, routine check-ups, and treatment of things like cavities, root canals, damaged or injured teeth and issues related to mouth and jaw health. It can be assumed that all individuals that have gone to dental school have the basic skills to provide these sorts of services. When most people think of the dentist, a general dentist is what comes to mind.
Cosmetic Dentists
Cosmetic dentists are in many ways artists along with being experts in restorative dentistry. The goal of a cosmetic dentist is to provide a beautiful and functional smile to their patients. They use techniques such as crowns, implants, veneers and dentures to repair a smile so that it is not only functional but it also fits the patients’ needs of having a perfect smile. Many general dentists provide this care, or will refer a patient to a restorative dentist for functional repair of missing or damaged teeth. However, the patient that is looking for a result that exceeds the basic repair or replacement of a missing or damaged tooth, will look for a cosmetic dentist that can not only make the necessary repair, but will consider the complete aesthetic nature of the repair. This may mean that an implant is combined with veneers or aggressive whitening procedures to make the entire smile look new and fresh.
