Is it really possible to make your teeth cavity-proof?
OK – “cavity-proof” probably isn’t really a word. But it is attractive, isn’t it? Wouldn’t it be nice to know that every time you went to your dentist for your regular cleaning and exam, you did so confident in knowing you didn’t have any cavities? And, staying with this “dream”, you would know that you didn’t have any cavities because you had “cavity-proofed” your teeth. How great would that be?
If you are like just about anyone, you are thrilled by that idea. Granted, you will still have to go to your dentist regularly, and you would have to tend to other issues or problems that may arise, but at least you would be free from having to deal with cavities and fillings and an extra visit to your dentist.
Well guess what? This doesn’t have to be a fantasy.
The answer to the title question is Yes! It is possible to avoid cavities. In other words, “cavity-proof” your teeth.
Here is what you need to know and do to avoid getting cavities.
Stop consuming cavity-causing foods and drinks. Makes sense, right? In fact, this is so logical that after you learn this you may even feel you don’t have to read any further. But this is easier said (and read) than done. Cavity-causing foods and drinks are things with sugar. This means stop – or severely cut down on – consuming beverages with high amounts of sugar or those that are highly acidic.
Foods and drinks with sugar and high amounts of acidic properties can be damaging to your teeth’s protective coating. Coffee is a serious culprit. And, if there is a serious erosion of this coating, cavities are easily enabled to form. If you cut these sugary or highly acidic items out of our diet, you have accelerated your chance of not getting cavities.
Set up and maintain a regular oral hygiene schedule and regimen. There are a host of reasons why you need to take good care of your gums and teeth. This means if your objective is to prevent cavities from ever forming, by adopting proper dental care habits, you will experience additional benefits. How’s that for incentive and motivation?
Brush your teeth two times a day and floss once a day – at the least. This is all that is required to be secure in knowing you are doing your dental health diligence. You are taking the steps to prevent cavities from forming and you are positively affecting your oral health. Your gums will also benefit which means you are doing your part to prevent gingivitis (i.e. gum disease) from developing.
Make and keep regular dentist appointments
See your dentist on average every six months. Even if your teeth are shiny white and you have absolutely no discomfort or issues, make a routine dentist appointment and dot’ cancel it. Get a good cleaning and a checkup. This activity can preempt all sorts of potential issues. In effect, it’s like an insurance policy against cavities and other dental problems.
