October is National Dental Hygiene Month!
When we think of October we think of Trick or Treat with kids filling up their plastic pumpkins or pillowcases full of candy and sweets. However, October is also the time of year we recognize and show our appreciation for our dental hygienists and bring awareness to dental wellness across the country. The month-long campaign is focused primarily on children’s oral health. Here are just a few daily habits for you and your children that will promote healthy teeth and gums:
- Brushing – what might be the right toothbrush for you may not be the right toothbrush for someone else. Be sure your toothbrush is not too long or short; the head is not too big or small; and the bristles are not too hard or too small. Make sure it’s just right for you! Keep your brush clean by not storing it on the bathroom counter or another place where it can easily be contaminated by bacteria. To help with avoiding bacteria, it’s important to replace your toothbrush regularly!
- Flossing – When it comes to flossing, the best approach is to keep it simple! We recommend you floss using traditional string floss in lieu of a floss pick. Wrap the floss around your thumb and forefinger and make a “C” shape on the side of your tooth and floss up and down about a half dozen times. Most importantly, make flossing a daily routine!
- Rinsing – Mouthwash is not a replacement for brushing and flossing your teeth daily. However, it can help to protect your teeth from cavities and periodontal disease. Especially if you use a fluoride rinse. An added benefit to using mouthwash is it can help with bad breath. Rinse your mouth for 30 to 60 seconds and don’t worry if you do it before or after you brush and floss.
- Chewing – many of us have small habits we do throughout the day that could impact our dental health. Such habits as nail chewing or snacking on sunflower seeds can potentially damage your teeth. Crunching on ice can potentially result in a fractured tooth that permanently ruins a tooth. Other actions such as rough toothbrushing, using your teeth as a tool, or grinding your teeth can result in a damaged tooth. Treat your teeth with respect and they may possibly last you a lifetime.
- Eating Healthy – Cutting down on sugars that cause decay such as sucrose, fructose, and glucose are just three types. Many processed foods have sugar in them so read the ingredients carefully. But remember that “no added sugar” does not necessarily mean that there is no sugar in the product. It just means there is additional sugar added. It also may not be obvious since sugar may be listed on the label as “carbohydrates”.
